Removing A Large Tree Stump: Dealing With the Impossible

There are many yards that have space where a tree once flourished. A bad storm, tree rot, or many other reasons could have been the cause. And hauling away a dead tree, even without the use of a hand chain hoist, is child’s play when compared to getting rid of a large stump. While there are many methods available, chemical, fire, and others, removing a stump by hand has the possibility of leading to a successful job without the inclusion of aspects that could be potentially damaging. With an ax or chainsaw, a chain or lever hoist, an eyesore can be taken care of within a weekend.

Start with your chainsaw to remove any lower branches attached to the trunk. Remember the precautions, such as safety goggles and gloves. This job shouldn’t include a trip to the emergency room. In addition, use the chainsaw to remove the uppermost portion of the trunk. Leave enough room for leverage.

Next up, you’re going to need either a digging bar or shovel. Start digging to reveal the roots around the stump. The compulsion might be to use an ax to get through some of the larger roots and expose others. Hold off as much as possible. A power washer or hose can work to expose more roots instead. While this may create a bit of a mess, it nonetheless will help with the final process.

When you have exposed as much of the roots as possible, then it’s time to use your ax. Using a chainsaw is not recommended at this point. If the blade were to accidentally hit the ground or dirt, you could spray stones or cause other damage. Using an ax may seem like more work. But when compared to the damage a chainsaw could cause, the effort will be all the more worth it.

Push against the tree trunk. More roots will become exposed. Use the ax to cut the remaining roots. Keep pushing and pulling until the tree trunk has become free. Once this has happened, the crane and hoist will do the rest. However, please make sure that the crane is on steady and level ground and do not exceed weight guidelines. While these tools can lift an incredible amount of weight, improper usage can damage both the equipment and quite possibly yourself.
